Key achievements

  • Headed the ophthalmology service at Alexandra Hospital

  • Senior Consultant at National University Hospital (NUH) and concurrently the Retina lead for Ng Teng Fong Hospital prior to leaving for private practice.

  • Performed more than 3,000 cataract surgeries since 2006 and more than 2,000 retina surgeries since 2012

  • Headed the vision performance centre at SAF Military Medicine Institute overseeing the refractive surgery program.

Experience

  • Dr Paul Zhao is the Director, Vitreoretinal Surgery and Retina Services at Eagle Eye Centre. 

  • His areas of expertise are in cataract, general ophthalmology, implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), retina and complex lens disorders.

  • His sub-specialty is in Retina. He performs retina surgery for conditions such as retinal detachment, macular holes and epiretinal membranes, diabetic eye disease (tractional retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage) and vitreomacular traction.

  • He has a special interest in the management of subluxed and dislocated lenses, and uses the latest sutureless techniques for the scleral fixation of intraocular lenses.

  • He also performs cataract surgery and is trained in the latest technology using femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and the use of premium intraocular lenses for correction of astigmatism and presbyopia.

  • Dr Zhao graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He then went on to do basic and advanced specialty training in ophthalmology before pursuing his retina fellowship at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.

  • Besides his clinical work, he held the position of assistant professor at NUS. He has over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also been involved in several pharmaceutical trials and collaborative clinical research with A*Star, SERI and other restructured hospitals in Singapore.
