DIABETES AND THE EYE

Diabetic Retinopathy

It is important to have your eyes checked regularly if you have diabetes. Often times, the vision is only affected when the disease in the eye is very severe. Early screening by a retina specialist can allow timely and appropriate interventions such as intravitreal injections or laser treatment to be done to maximise the vision and prevent potentially blinding consequences.

INTRAVITREAL OZURDEX INJECTION

The drug is injected in the eye to treat swelling of the retina due to diabetes. Other drugs eg. anti-VEGF can also be injected in the eye for proliferative diabetic retinopathy where abnormal, unhealthy blood vessels grow in the eye cause bleeding or even retina detachment. Various options of drugs are available and it is important to consult your retina specialist on which drug to choose for your eye.
