Symptoms That Need a Retina Specialist's Attention
The retina is the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Some changes need prompt assessment.
Seek assessment on the same day if you see:
-
Sudden shower of new floaters
-
Flashes of light
-
A curtain, shadow or dark veil across part of your vision
-
Sudden drop in central vision

Arrange an assessment within a few days if you see:
-
Straight lines looking wavy or bent
-
Blurred or distorted central vision
-
A dark or missing patch in the centre of your vision
-
Colours looking faded
These may relate to the macula, such as a macular hole, epiretinal membrane or age-related macular degeneration. You can check your central vision with an Amsler grid. Macular hole | Epiretinal membrane | AMD
